Positive Vibes Only (PVO) ,,,

...is part of our school’s contribution to a growing movement across Aotearoa New Zealand and within our Waikato region. It brings together schools, clubs, coaches, parents, and whānau to be intentional about the experiences we create in sport and what we define as success.

We are proud that Berkley Normal School is one of the first primary and intermediate schools to join and support this movement, leading the way in shaping positive sporting environments for our people.

Why we have PVO

Too many people are choosing not to come back to sport.

Not because they don’t love the game but because of the experiences they have, often shaped by adult behaviour on the sideline, at trainings, or while supporting and volunteering.

At Berkley Normal School, we know our people matter.
The way we show up for our tamariki and for each other shapes whether sport is a place where people feel confident, connected, and excited to return.

Positive experiences keep people in sport.
Negative ones can push them away.

Our school’s contribution

As a school, we are choosing to be intentional about the environment we create for our people.

This means:

  • Focusing on positive, inclusive experiences for all
  • Valuing effort, enjoyment, and growth as success not just winning
  • Creating a space where everyone feels they belong and are supported

How you can support

We all play a role in shaping the experience.

As parents and whānau, you can:

  • Encourage effort and enjoyment
  • Use positive, supportive language
  • Help create a sideline where all participants feel safe and valued
  • Remember it is about helping our people love sport, not leave it

Recently Berkley sent two Equestrian teams to compete at the Waikato Schools’ Show Jumping Championships in KihiKihi. They competed in a series of different show jumping rounds and challenges.

After a very successful day both teams managed to place on the podium with the Berkley Fast and Flawless placing third and the Berkley Oxer Aces placing first overall in the primary intermediate division. In the Oxer Aces we had Holly M, Emma C, Willow M and Keanu P. In Fast and Flawless we had Mila G, Emma C, Beau C and Keanu P.

Thank you to Mrs Grady for helping to organise this event for us.

It is time for the Waikato Schools XC Mountain Bike Champs. The event is open to all students in years 5 to 13 in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions.

This year, the event will be held on Thursday, 12 March 2026, at the Te Miro Mountain Bike Park on Waterworks Road. The tracks are suitable for all abilities; some off-road experience would be helpful.

Food and drink are available at the venue; please bring cash.

We need to stress that the event is open to all schools in the Bay of Plenty and Waikato Regions; however, we are no longer allowed to refer to it as WBOPS.

Remember, registrations need to be completed by the school, not the students.
